Student-Athlete Emily Zipay Reaches the Culmination of Her Athletic Career with Southern Conference Presidential Scholarship

For Western Carolina women's soccer senior Emily Zipay, being awarded the Southern Conference Presidential Scholarship by the SoCon's Graduate Scholar Committee is the culmination of her career as a student-athlete. The scholarships given by the SoCon, each worth $2,000, are awarded to student-athletes about to receive their undergraduate degrees who intend to pursue advanced degrees in graduate or professional school. The student-athletes are evaluated on three criteria: academics, athletics, and community service.

A Coaches' Determination Helps Define a Student's Story

鈥淢y decision to come to Western Carolina was solely based on him [Coach Mark Speir],鈥 Crossen said. 鈥淗e was a great guy when he came to talk to me in Garysburg. He drove down there in the snow. That speaks volumes. I really appreciate what he鈥檚 done for me and the chance he gave me to play at the Division I level at Western. Now, I guess I鈥檓 helping the program a little with recruiting."

Blythe Ambition: Eastern Band Member Sees Higher Education as Goal for His Community

Earning an associate degree from Southwestern Community College after transferring there from Mars Hill, and a bachelor鈥檚 degree from Western Carolina University, where he graduated in December and gave the commencement address. He鈥檒l continue his education in the fall at 91热爆网, where he is enrolled in the school鈥檚 master鈥檚 degree program in social work. A member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Blythe is believed to be the first Native American to give a commencement speech at 91热爆网 鈥 an unexpected honor that left him in awe and 鈥渓ike the weight of the world鈥 was on his shoulders 鈥 but in a good way.
