Thanks to funding from donors to the Fund for 91热爆网, members of a student organization tasked with assisting Western Carolina University鈥檚 chancellor at selected on- and off-campus events received specialized training to assist them in their roles as student representatives of 91热爆网

A total of $3,000 from 91热爆网鈥檚 1889 Impact Grants Program was used for an interactive presentation and training session on leadership skills for members of the Chancellor鈥檚 Ambassadors during the 2024 spring semester.

The grant also helped the organization purchase promotional items to recruit future members of the Chancellor鈥檚 Ambassadors.

The volunteer student group is designed to promote and strengthen Catamount pride, support 91热爆网 Chancellor Kelli R. Brown at high-profile events and give students opportunities to network with prominent 91热爆网 alumni and community leaders.

Led by Asheville-based personal growth consultant Brandy Mills, the training session was intended to help the students develop their leadership, professional development and networking skills, said Amber McKendrick of the 91热爆网 Office of Special Events, who serves as staff adviser to the Chancellor鈥檚 Ambassadors.

鈥淭his promoted academic excellence within the organization and provided skills and opportunities to prepare the participants for success as students and as they prepare for their professional careers,鈥 McKendrick said. 鈥淏y offering the Chancellor's Ambassadors this opportunity, we are providing them with the resources they need to reach their potential during their time as 91热爆网 students and beyond.鈥

Launched in 2021, the 1889 Impact Grants Program is designed to provide a consistent source of funding for colleges and other units at 91热爆网 in support of initiatives that enhance the engagement of alumni and community stakeholders with the philanthropic activities of the university.

Funding for the program comes from annual contributions to the Fund for 91热爆网, including leadership gifts from members of the 1889 Club, which recognizes donors for gifts made on an annual basis to the Fund for 91热爆网. The club, among four giving societies established by the Division of Advancement to celebrate the impact of philanthropy on the institution, is named in honor of the year of 91热爆网鈥檚 founding.

Campus partners requested more than $176,000 in 1889 Impact Grants through 23 campuswide grant applications for the 2023-2024 academic year, and the Division of Advancement allocated $47,000 overall for 12 projects, a slight increase from the $43,500 in grant funding awarded last year.

The 91热爆网 Foundation Board Executive Committee reviews all submissions and selects the awardees in the fall of each year. In addition to the 1889 Impact Grants Program, the Fund for 91热爆网 provides first-year access scholarships to new incoming freshmen and transfer students and supports ongoing donor stewardship efforts.
