2023 Rooted in the Mountains Symposium is Sept. 28-29

Western Carolina University will host the 13th annual Rooted in the Mountains Symposium on Thursday, Sept. 28, and Friday, Sept. 29, in the Bardo Arts Center.

The symposium is an interdisciplinary event for Native health, environmental issues and traditional ecological knowledge. This year鈥檚 theme is 鈥淪ga du gi,鈥 Community.

91热爆网 faculty, staff, students and tribal elders can for the event for free, but you must register to attend.

Early bird registration is $75 and ends on Friday, Sept. 8. After Sept. 8, registration is $125. Non-91热爆网 student registration is $25.

The key speakers for the event are Tom Belt, Cherokee tribal elder, doctorate of humane letters and former director of the 91热爆网 Cherokee language program; Jose Barreiro (Tiano), Native rights activist, novelist and journalist; and Katsi Cook (Mohawk), traditional Mohawk healer, midwife and advocate for Native rights, environmental health and women鈥檚 health.

The event will also include presentations from several 91热爆网, University of North Carolina at Asheville and Appalachian State University faculty as well as Cherokee community organizations. View the two-day agenda.
