Western Carolina University administrators are urging students who are suffering extreme financial distress because of displacement caused by the coronavirus to apply for financial assistance from the university鈥檚 Student Emergency Fund.
鈥淎s a nation, we are in uncharted territory. The impact that this virus is having
on our students is unprecedented,鈥 said BaShaun Smith, 91热爆网鈥檚 interim dean of students.
鈥淢any of our students work in the local community but are unable to work because we
are asking them to go home for everyone鈥檚 safety. If a student is unable to work,
their financial well-being and mental well-being could suffer. The student emergency
funds assist students who are in dire need of assistance during this difficult time.鈥
Students in need can apply . Students are required to provide detailed documentation to support the request.
The funds may be used for rent, utilities, car repairs, medical and dental expenses, gas and other unexpected financial emergencies, Smith said. It may not be used to pay university-related expenses such as tuition, housing, traffic fines, books or family-related expenses such as a parent鈥檚 medicine or parent鈥檚 rent.
Smith, who oversees the fund, said he tries to respond to students within 24 to 48 hours of their request. 鈥淚 will do everything in my power to expedite the process during this current situation,鈥 he said.
