Poet, editor and essayist John Hoppenthaler will read from his work at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in Room 304 of Western Carolina University鈥檚 Coulter Building.
Hoppenthaler is a professor of English at East Carolina University and the author of three collections from Carnegie Mellon University Press 鈥 鈥淟ives of Water,鈥 鈥淎nticipate the Coming Reservoir鈥 and 鈥淒omestic Garden,鈥 2015 winner of the North Carolina Poetry Society鈥檚 Brockman-Campbell Award for the best volume of poetry published by a North Carolinian.
Hoppenthaler鈥檚 work has appeared in publications such as New York Magazine, the North Carolina Literary Review and Southern Humanities Review. He has served in literary positions as diverse as Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for his region and Toni Morrison鈥檚 personal assistant.
Kevin Dublin of Poetry International wrote that Hoppenthaler is a poet 鈥渃apable of taking personal moments and through beautiful lyric force and distillation, making them into persona poems that are a part of the deep waters of our collective human consciousness.鈥
