Pride of the Mountain Marching Band Snare Drum Player Inspires the Next Generation

Amanda Muse is one of very few female snare drum players who perform at the highest levels of marching band. After overcoming stereotypes and physical challenges, Amanda uses her talent to inspire a new generation of musicians. The Pride of the Mountains Marching Band has given her the opportunity to share her gift with thousands of younger drummers. It has also given her the ride of a lifetime while performing in the Macy鈥檚 Thanksgiving Day Parade and at the Bands of America Grand Nationals competition in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The former trustee enrolled at what was then called Western Carolina College 61 years ago, three years after the Supreme Court鈥檚 landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.

I was an average student with a modest background and a deep appreciation for the faculty and staff who helped me get through four years of college. Classroom spaces in Forsyth and Belk buildings now bear the names of two Western Carolina University corporate partners in recognition of recent contributions from Entegra Bank and Vannoy Construction toward student scholarships and academic program support.
