Graduate Student Emily Ashe

Graduate student explores bacterial communities in forensic science

Emily Ashe already knew what she wanted to do long before she came to 91热爆网 for her bachelor鈥檚 degree. Knowing that she wanted to have a future in medicine was a key factor in choosing 91热爆网, where she eventually earned her degree in pre-med biology. Now, she is in the graduate forensic pathology program, after taking a year off for a fellowship with the FBI.

Tumors Hamper But Don鈥檛 Stop Student from Living Her Best College Life

At age 19, Victoria (Tori) Renfroe has about 30 years left to live, according to the hourglass she鈥檚 been handed by her doctors. That鈥檚 right, to age 49. Yes, she鈥檚 hopeful for a little more time, and with regular doctors鈥 visits, she might get it, she said. But in the meantime, she鈥檚 got college to finish, law school to attend, human rights to protect, a puppy to raise, a relationship to revel in and, well, you get the idea.

Recognition for four graduating students with perfect GPAs, presentation of an award to one of the UNC System鈥檚 premier teachers, and the inspiring success stories of two other graduating students were among the highlights.

Ed and Andrea Cody Alumni of the Month

Meet our Alumni of the Month: Ed and Andrea Cody! They graduated in 1979 and 1980 with degrees in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and Home Economic with a concentration in consumer-resource management respectively.  

Grace Woodard

Graduate Profile: Grace Woodard

Grace Woodard will graduate with a bachelor of fine arts degree in studio art, and a concentration in sculpture, ceramics, and papermaking. During her time at 91热爆网, Grace has received numerous accolades including an Honors College scholarship, Friends of the Arts scholarship, Chancellor鈥檚 Academic Scholarship, and the Tara and Jim Miller Art Fund Scholarship. Her thoughtful and nuanced work has also been recognized through a project grant award, and with the 鈥淏est in Show鈥 and the Chancellor鈥檚 Award at the 51st annual Juried Undergraduate Exhibition.  

Adam Gregory

Graduate Profiles: Adam Gregory

Adam Gregory is receiving his degree in mathematics from the College of Arts and Sciences. Entering as a freshman at 91热爆网, Adam did not plan to study mathematics, yet today he graduates one of the department鈥檚 most outstanding students. During the last three years, Adam participated in two National Science Foundation-funded summer programs, one at the University of Texas in Tyler during the summer of 2017, and another at Rochester Institute of Technology during the summer of 2018. He credits 91热爆网 faculty with much of his success.  

Jacob Lewallen

Graduate Profile: Jacob Lewallen

A job as a manufacturing engineer is waiting for Jacob Lewallen after graduation, but he鈥檒l have some time before he starts 鈥 at least a couple of weeks. The College of Engineering and Technology graduate from Siler City lined up future employment by attending a 91热爆网 job fair earlier in the semester.   

Hannah Pollard

Graduate Profile: Hannah Pollard

Hannah Pollard is graduating from the College of Health and Human Sciences with her doctorate in physical therapy. During her time at 91热爆网, Hannah has served as the quality improvement officer for the student-run Mountain Area Pro Bono Health Services Clinic, providing effective, free physical therapy and social work services to the underserved and underinsured population of Western North Carolina. Hannah鈥檚 efforts have helped to improve the quality of life, health, and function of members of the community. She is also responsible for tracking all clinic statistics and using this information to improve clinic or student board procedures.
